Routine Checkups for a Lifetime of Healthy Smiles

At Knox Pediatric Dentistry, with our preventive dental services, we emphasize its importance by scheduling a child dental check up every six months to maintain your it’s oral health in optimal condition. These regular visits not only allow our pediatric dentist to closely monitor your child’s oral development but also allow us to cultivate a “dental home” where your child feels comfortable and supported. During these visits, we can promote cavity prevention for children and intervene early to address any issues before they escalate, ensuring that your child’s smile is protected for the long term. Our goal is to create a warm and familiar environment, helping your child form a positive connection with dental care that lasts into adulthood.

As part of our comprehensive pediatric preventive routine checkup, we offer specialized preventive dental services such as fluoride varnish and dental sealants. Fluoride varnish, applied at the end of each cleaning, acts as a protective barrier by strengthening tooth enamel and defending against cavities and decay, which is covered under our children teeth cleaning process. Additionally, we recommend dental sealants for added protection. These sealants are applied to the chewing surfaces of molar teeth to seal out harmful bacteria and food particles, significantly lowering the risk of tooth decay that is covered under our preventive dental services. Our Houston-based child dentist teeth cleaning services are key components of your child’s ongoing oral health plan, designed to keep their smile strong, healthy, and free from future dental issues.

FAQs

How often should my child have a dental checkup and cleaning?

Most children benefit from a dental checkup approximately every six months. However, the schedule may be adjusted based on your child’s cavity risk, gum health, previous dental treatment, orthodontic needs and ability to maintain good oral hygiene. Children with active decay or a higher risk of dental problems may need to be seen more frequently.

You can schedule your child’s examination and cleaning at our Houston pediatric dental office on Veterans Memorial Drive. During the visit, we can evaluate the teeth, gums, bite and oral development while discussing brushing, flossing, fluoride and cavity prevention. Call 713-481-3700 to request an appointment.

A checkup typically includes a review of medical and dental changes, an examination of the teeth and gums and an evaluation of the bite and dental development. Depending on your child’s age and needs, we may also recommend a professional cleaning, fluoride varnish, sealants or X-rays. Parents receive practical guidance for home care and preventing future problems.

Fluoride varnish is widely used to help strengthen teeth and reduce cavity risk in children. The recommendation depends on your child’s age, cavity history, diet, oral hygiene and overall fluoride exposure. Please tell us about your child’s drinking-water source, toothpaste use, supplements, allergies and medical conditions so we can make an individualized recommendation.

Dental sealants help protect the deep grooves of back teeth, where food and bacteria can be difficult to remove with a toothbrush. They do not replace brushing, flossing, fluoride or regular dental visits, but they can provide an additional layer of protection. We will examine your child’s molars and cavity risk before recommending sealants.

Dental X-rays are recommended according to your child’s individual needs rather than automatically at every appointment. The timing depends on symptoms, cavity risk, tooth spacing, previous decay, dental development and whether areas between the teeth can be examined directly. We will explain which images are recommended and how they will help guide your child’s care.

Use a tiny smear, approximately the size of a grain of rice, as soon as the first tooth appears. Children ages three through six should use a pea-sized amount. An adult should brush or closely supervise twice a day and teach the child to spit rather than swallow. Young children usually need hands-on help to clean every tooth properly.

Begin flossing when two teeth touch and the area between them can no longer be cleaned properly with a toothbrush. A parent will usually need to floss for a young child. String floss, floss holders or another recommended tool may be used. Ask us to demonstrate the technique if your child has tight contacts, braces, bleeding gums or sensory difficulties.

Help your child brush twice daily with the correct amount of fluoride toothpaste, clean between touching teeth, limit frequent sugary drinks and snacks and encourage water between meals. Avoid sending a child to bed with a bottle or cup containing milk, juice or another sweetened drink. Regular checkups allow us to identify changing cavity risks and provide personalized preventive recommendations.

Many plans cover routine examinations and cleanings, while fluoride, sealants and X-rays may have age or frequency limitations. Please call us with your child’s insurance information and confirm benefits directly with the plan. Ask whether sealants are limited to particular teeth, whether fluoride has an age limit and whether a deductible or copayment applies.

Current pediatric guidance supports individualized checkup schedules, supervised fluoride toothpaste use and X-rays based on clinical need and cavity risk.
